Wary of the times ahead in the job market, business schools are working on a risk-minimisation strategy and looking at doubling the pool of companies on the campus for the summer placements scheduled in November this year. Accordingly, they have invited more companies to participate in the summer placements this academic year.

“We are more worried about the summer placements, which begin in November, as students in their first year would be going for it. The final placements are way ahead and also the second-year students already have pre-placement offers in hand,” said a placement chairperson from one of the Indian institutes of management (IIMs).

Summer placements take place for the first-year students in November. The students get placed with respective companies for a two-month internship programme during summers, usually in May and June. These internships later get converted into job offers called pre-placement offers.

B-schools say a few companies they are depending on have either said they may not turn up for placements or have expressed a lower level of commitment. So, the institutes are approaching ‘fresh’ recruiters for summer placements this year. IIM Bangalore, for instance, has already approached around 100 companies to participate in placements this year.

The institute is actively pursuing talks with another 200 companies to have nearly 300 companies on the campus this year for the strength of its 300-plus students. “We are just being cautious in the way the job market is behaving. We prefer approaching more number of companies this year as we do expect that a few companies might falter during placements,” said a professor of one of the IIMs. The institutes have intensified the process as the number of students on the campuses has gone up as compared to that in the last year.

IIM Kozhikode, which had a batch of 180 students last year, has around 265 students to place this year. Currently, the institute is in touch with over 200 companies for summer placements this year. Many of these companies have conducted corporate presentations. Prominent among these are JPMorgan, Hewitt Associates, HUL, Citibank, HSBC and others. Last year, the institute had around 75 companies on the campus to recruit students for the internship.

At IIM Indore, the institute has already placed around 65 per cent of its students and has seen an increase of around 10 per cent in the number of companies approaching it to participate in summer placements this year. The institute is looking at the manufacturing, FMCG and IT sectors aggressively this year. It had increased its batch size from 180 to 240 students this year.

At Mumbai-based KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies, the institute is targeting a 50 per cent increase in the number of companies on its campus this year. “As compared to the last year, where around 120 companies visited the campus, we are targeting over 180 firms to ensure that all students get placed for summer internships. Although we have hardly got any negative vibes during these turbulent times, some of the companies do have hinted that compensations or stipends may not rise this year amidst the economic slowdown,” said N D Sharma, the placement coordinator at the institute.

As expected, finance as a sector has been shying away from B-school campuses, added Sharma. The institute expects more IT and ITeS firms as well as consulting firms to pick up the 300-odd students from summer placements.

IIM-A students will assist MPs in complaint management – www.tenaday.in

Students at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (IIM-A) are to assist members of parliament by developing a web-based electronic interface to help MPs handle complaints more efficiently.

The information and communication technology (ICT) system will allow citizens to register their complaints through an interactive voice response system (IVRS) and receive feedback from the relevant department. The project, dubbed “Connect with Leaders”, will also help MPs handle complaints more efficiently and aid efficient follow-up.

Initially, the students will analyse areas of discontent and develop a communication channel to link MPs with their respective constituencies. The medium for communication may be telephone, mobile phone or internet. The students will opt for a communication medium that is accessible. The system will be designed for three MPs and, depending on its success, will be adopted by Parliament.

Until recently, foreign companies have been able to pick the best brains from IIMs. However, this year, Indian companies may get to hire them. Because of the global financial crisis, students of IIMs are believed to be shifting towards traditional management streams such as marketing, HR and consulting instead of finance.

Many students are said to be considering stable companies in the country in preference to a foreign company. IIT students are hoping that things will turn out well as the placement season is nearing.

Ahmedabad: Already shaken by images of employees walking out jobless from the Lehman Brothers office and with the global and domestic markets in deep turmoil, the golden boys of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, are keeping their fingers tightly crossed as the placement season draws close.

At IIM-A, did they know it was coming?

Job markets are shrinking drastically, and placements across all B-schools in the country are expected to run into rough waters. The signs are not good at all — the number of pre-placement offers have come down, salaries offered are lower and there is a near absence of the erstwhile biggest recruiters – finance companies and investment banks — from the list of companies.

IIM-A holds interactive sessions to deal with US crisis

Pre-placement offers are usually made by companies that start head-hunting before the formal placement season begins in March 2009.

“Students are scared about placements. Financial markets are down, and there is no way our placements can stay unaffected. It will be a task to maintain last year’s average salaries, forget the 25% growth witnessed every year,” said a second year student at IIM-A requesting anonymity.

While the student admitted that everyone would certainly get a good job, record-breaking dollar-salaries would not be heard of this year. Nearly 46% of the 2008 batch took up jobs in the financial sector; 57% of the 2009 batch did their summer placements in the banking and finance sectors. The highest international salary at IIM-A was $360,000 and the highest domestic offer was Rs70 lakh.

Though placement officials at the IIM-A strictly maintain that recruitments have not been affected by the current recession, faculty members in the know have confided that a 10-15% fall is expected in the number of offers.

The bright side is that companies are coming from industries like marketing, research, event management, consulting firms, public policy agencies etc.

Faculty placement coordinator at IIM-A Prof Saral Mukherjee said, “Summer placements at IIM-A will start on November 13. I don’t want to comment right now.” IIM-A student placement coordinator Mihir Lal was not available

IIM-L students wait for summer placements with fingers crossed – www.tenaday.in

Lucknow, October 27 : As the Indian Institute of Management-Lucknow (IIM-L) is all set to begin its summer placements from November 7, the possible impact of the global financial crisis looms large on the campus.
The 320 students who await summer placements are ready for fewer offers. Some think the institute will be lucky if half the usual crop of multinational companies come back. For others, it is a wait and watch situation. The IIM-L administration, however, is not sitting idle. According to sources, the institute will wait for a few more days to see if too many companies drop out of the placement game. In which case, the institute will open doors companies disallowed earlier.“There are some companies, which only register their presence in the campus but do not make offers. We usually keep such companies out of the placement list. This time, we may allow them to take part in the placement procedure,” said a faculty member.

Last year, around 285 students had received 424 summer placement offers. There was also a sudden spurt in international offers — 28 in 2007 from a dismal six of 2006.l

Apart from Lehman Brothers, companies like BNP Paribas Hong Kong, Citibank Hong Kong, Barclays Capital (London), Unilever (London), Proctor & Gamble, etc had made international offers.Prof Shushil Kumar, Chairman of the Placement cell at IIM-L, said: “The number of offers may be lower as compared to previous years. But nothing can be said as of now. The domestic companies may be the frontrunners this time. Things will be clear when the placement week begins from November 7.”The assurance by Merrill Lynch, a leading financial management company of the US to participate in the summer placements as promised earlier, has brought some hope to the students.

“In the last few years, companies have started giving importance to summer placements. They also give preference to the same students during final placements. Thus, taking the right decision during this period will be crucial,” said a student, who has decided to take up a job in the finance sector, despite the downfall.

IIM should motivate students to opt for politics: Kalam – www.tenaday.in

October 30, 2008

For more information and FREE online practice tests visit www.tenaday.in

Ahmedabad, Oct 26 (IANS) The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, must motivate its students to opt for politics as a career, says former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

‘IIM, Ahmedabad, should ensure that many of its students take politics as their career. When I ask youth whether they want to become IAS officers, many raise their hands, whether they want to become engineers, many raise their hands, if they want to go to Mars, all of them raise their hands. If I ask someone whether they want to join politics, then no one is interested,’ Kalam said here in a speech Saturday evening.

In his speech on ‘Nation, Challenges and Leadership’ at the IIM(A) campus, Kalam said youth alone can bring transparency, prosperity and leadership in the Indian polity.

Citing an example of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Kalam said what makes ISRO’s space efforts excel is its dedicated team of scientists, engineers and technical staff.

He said a few areas where India has it core competence for integrated action include agriculture and food processing; education and healthcare; information and communication technology; infrastructure; reliable and quality electric power, road and surface transport and necessary quality infrastructure and PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) for sustainable rural infrastructure development.

‘These areas are closely inter-related and have to be progressed in a coordinated way to lead to food, economic and national security,’ Kalam said.

‘The Indian GDP is growing at an average rate of eight per cent per annum, while the economists suggest that to remove poverty of 220 million the growth has to be 10 percent per annum consistently for over a decade. One of the components through which the rural-urban divide will be bridged is PURA,’ Kalam said.

Enumerating Indian scientific advancements in space with the recent launch of Chandrayaan I, he said the country presently has the capacity to build up to 90,000 DWT (deadweight tonnage) ships. ‘We will have three shipyards soon that will help build 100,000 DWT ships. India will also have trains traveling at 200km/hour,’ he predicted.

Opportunity for small institutes? – www.tenaday.in

October 30, 2008

For more information and FREE online practice tests visit www.tenaday.in

LUCKNOW: When giants like IIMs are apprehensive about their placements due to global economic recession, comparatively smaller institutes fear worse in the coming days.

Be it the management courses in the Lucknow University (LU) or technical colleges like Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), everywhere faces are grim. While students are worried about their future, teachers are busy assessing what impact the recession would bring in the Indian economy. The basic question is how such a large number of students graduating every year from the educational institutes will get jobs.

According to initial assessment the economic slump would dent the banking, finance, information technology and tourism sectors the most, whereas the impact would be limited in the mechanical, electronics, civil and instrumentation branches of engineering. Already, only 15 per cent of the graduates from technical and management institutes of UP, barring IIMs and IITs, are found to be employable in various studies because o

Rajiv Agarwal, a final engineering student, opted for information technology (IT) when he took admission to the BTech course four years ago. “At that time IT was going great and only toppers used to get the branch. But now we have come to know that jobs will be drastically cut in the IT sector due to this recession,” he said. Rajiv’s concern is not only how to get a job after graduation but also a decent package so that he can repay the loan taken for education.

There are over one lakh students enrolled in various courses in over 400 technical and management institutes affiliated to UP Technical University. Around 15,000 students graduate every year. The problem of placement would be more in the private institutes which have mushroomed all over the state. The pinch would be lesser in reputed government institutes like IET and HBTI.

Prof VK Singh, IET, said that meritorious students will get jobs in all the branches but the main problem will be for the middle rung and poor performers. “But then we have faced similar problems in 2000-2002 when companies refused to recruit students after campus placements citing economic recession at that time,” he said. This time, he added, it is predicted that recession would continue for next 4-5 years. “But I am sure things will revive and hope that the impact of the slump would be a mild one in India,” he said.

“The global recession, if continues, will definitely cut jobs, particularly in banking and insurance sector, where our students were getting maximum placements in recent years,” said JK Sharma, director, Institute of Management Sciences, Lucknow University, which runs 12 management courses in various disciplines such as business administration, e-business, tourism management, retail management, international business, finance management, human resource etc.

Nearly 720 students graduate from these 12 courses every year. The pay packages offered are between Rs 3-6 lakh per annum. Often placements are not 100 per cent. Situation had improved in last couple of years. But now global recession has left students worried.

Sharma, however, also sees an opportunity. “Companies going for cost cuts may offer more jobs to middle rung institutes instead of recruiting from IIMs on hefty packages,” he said. “But we will have to adopt an aggressive approach this year and target more companies,” he said. Earlier, few companies used to recruit in bulk but now the trend may change.

Manoj Dixit, director, tourism management programme, also feels that job opportunities in retail, insurance, banking and tourism sectors will come down due to the recession. “Situation will become clear after a month or two. So far we even don’t know how long this recession would last. The depression was predicted to start from 2010. Nobody had imagined that it will take the world into its grip two years in advance,” he said. However, he said, India will survive the depression because of its strong consumer base.

Ritesh Srivastava, a student, said that most of the students have taken loans for studies. “No jobs would ruin families,” he said. Rimjhim, another student, however, felt that there was no need to be cynical because it would be premature to predict anything. “Let’s wait and watch,” she said. Students said that university authorities should come up with a strategy and start working now.

A Few Tips for those who are preparing for CAT Exam – www.tenaday.in

October 30, 2008

For more information and FREE online practice tests visit www.tenaday.in

This time of the year you can generally see anxiety and stress on the faces of all B-School aspirants because they are continuously preparing themselves for the biggest challenge of their lives. “Cracking CAT”. Those 2.5 hours decide the future of thousands of hopefuls. Strategizing, mock CAT’s, time management: these are all mandatory and have their own importance when it comes to making the CAT attempt meaningful.  After all success is just one correct answer away!

The first and foremost thing to do is set up a schedule for yourself. CAT preparation involves a lot of discipline because it’s all about concentration and reflex. You will have to be mentally prepared to sacrifice your weekend fun and long sleeping hours to practice the mock tests. These mock tests are very important and should be taken very seriously because they help you gauge your caliber very accurately. You get a clear picture of where you stand, what are your strengths and weaknesses and which areas you need to concentrate more on. At the end of every mock test all candidates are given a thorough solution list. Answering more and more mock tests is not the right approach. What is important is to analyze the solutions and use them when you spot a problem of similar nature sometime later on. The next crucial factor is time management. There is hardly enough time to read the question and think about its solution in CAT. You need to be very quick and sharp to crack the code.

You cannot afford to be slow from the very beginning. The momentum has to be build right from the very question itself. Another useful strategy is to know your strengths clearly. There are different sections in CAT. You might be good in some and might need extra time for others. Try to tackle the sections you are good at in the beginning. This will not only boost your confidence but will help you manage your remaining time more judiciously.

Always remember, every person is not a born genius and CAT is not only for those who are blessed with extraordinary intellect. With strict perseverance and discipline, you can also make your dreams come true.

CAT Papers Pattern

The CAT question paper has four different segments, namely, Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, Problem Solving and Data Interpretation. These multiple choices questions and are required to be answered only with a HB pencil on a computer coded OMR answer sheet. For each incorrect answer you get negative marks. Every year, the IIMs change the question pattern to prevent predictability. You should therefore have a deeper understanding of concepts and their applications to succeed in the CAT. It is to be noted that you have to perform well in all the three sections of the CAT as the test evaluates the overall aptitude of the student.
