What recession? IIM-K bags 14 global summer placements – www.tenaday.in

NEW DELHI/ KOLKATA/KOCHI: Global slowdown and job cutbacks be damned. The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode’s (IIM-K) class of 2010 just wrapped up its summer placements with the 261-strong batch getting placed across some 102 national and international firms, up from the 66 who participated last year.

The highest international stipend for the eight-week internship was $6000, offered by Vega Foods in Singapore. Coca-Cola came up with the highest domestic offer, with a Rs 1-lakh stipend. Summers 2009 also saw students walk away with 14 international offers versus four last year.

The profiles for interns are spread across locations like Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Germany, South Africa and London. Despite the anxieties due to the global economic crisis, national and international companies have flocked to the campus for summer placements for the batch of 2008-2010.

Interestingly, 27% offers came from BFSI, investment banking and private equity that’s a marginal dip from 28% last year, considering the increase in the number of students opting for summer placements. The catch being investment banks like JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank and Edelweiss Capital recruiting for their domestic operations. “Even if the scenario is negative in the global markets, companies are still expanding their domestic operations and still they require people.” says IIM-K placement coordinator Hitesh, Bhagia.

In fact, banks and other financial institutions actually increased the number of offers as compared to last year. Some of the other banks that recruited from IIM-K were Citibank, Standard Chartered Bank, American Express, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank.

A large chunk of students opted for the strategy and consulting roles. Arthur D Little , one of the world’s top management consulting firms offered roles in its Dubai office. The Freudenberg Group reaffirmed its relationship with IIM Kozhikode by picking up students for strategy and operations roles based in Germany and Hong Kong.

Regular recruiters like Deloitte, Hewitt and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) picked up students for consulting roles.

IIM-K also had niche roles in the marketing and operations consulting space by Frost and Sullivan and i2 Consulting. Wipro and IBM also offered roles in their consulting and strategy divisions. 20% of the students would be interning in consulting firms in India and abroad.

A highlight of the summers process was the increasing interest of media organisations like Sony Entertainment Television, Viacom, Star News and BBC World which offered both creative and marketing roles. Marketing roles were also offered by Nestle and Coca-Cola while HUL, Colgate Palmolive, Marico, ITC, Aditya Birla Group and Johnson & Johnson picked students for roles in branding, sales and marketing, operations and logistics. Real estate firms like Ansal API, Godrej and ABG Infralogistics too took part in the placement.

Government way ahead of private companies in giving IIMs work – www.tenaday.in

November 5, 2008
For more information and FREE online practice tests visit www.tenaday.in
NEW DELHI: IIMs might be the toast of India Inc but there is very little that they do to provide these elite institutions with financial muscle, a must for their autonomy.

When it comes to giving consultancy work to IIMs, government bodies — central and state ministries and PSUs — are far ahead of private sector in seeking consultancy workfrom IIMs. Even multilateral bodies, embassies and funding agencies give more work to IIMs than India Inc.

An RTI application to all IIMs through HRD ministry has revealed that since 2004 government’s share in giving consultancy work ranges from 34% to 89%, whereas private sector’s share hovers between 8% and 16%. IIM Bangalore and Kolkata did not reply to the query.

Take IIM Ahmedabad. In 2004-05 , the institute did consultancy worth Rs 3.63 crore. Of this, Rs 1.21 crore, constituting 33.4%, came from government departments, Rs 1.72 crore from multilateral bodies like World Bank, UN, foreign universities and embassies. The latter’s contribution was 47.3%. Private sector work to IIMA was worth Rs 70.16 lakh, a paltry 19.3%.

In 2005-06 , IIM-A did consultancy worth Rs 4.50 crore. Government stake went up to Rs 2.54 crore or 56.5%, while multilateral bodies came down to 23.6%. In real terms, their contribution was Rs 1.06 crore. Private sector contribution was 19.9% or Rs 89.59 lakh.

In 2006-07 , though there was a decline in IIM-A’s consultancy work, a major source of its income being Sixth Pay Commission . It got projects worth Rs 2.87 crore. But government agencies remained its mainstay giving work worth Rs 1.62 crore, constituting 56.5% of consultancy work that year. Foreign government/multilateral bodies/embassies gave work worth Rs 1.01 crore to IIMA. Their contribution was 35.4%. Private sector’s share was barely 8.2% which in real terms stood at Rs 28.78 lakh.

In 2007-08 , out of the total income of Rs 5.78 crore, government gave work worth Rs 2.94 crore or 51.4%. Foreign bodies gave work to the tune of Rs 2 crore. Their share was 35%. Private companies managed to improve their share to 13.5% which in real terms is Rs 77.5 lakh.

From 2004 to 2008, IIMA’s earning through consultancy was Rs 16.75 crore. Government contributed 49.8% (Rs 8.33 crore), foreign bodies 34.7% (Rs 5.80 crore) and private sector 15.6% (Rs 2.60 crore). IIM Lucknow seems to be running totally at the mercy of the UP and central governments . Between 2004 and 2008, it made Rs 7.36 crore through consultancy out of which government gave work worth Rs 6.44 crore.

Foreign bodies gave work worth Rs 31.96 lakh. Their contribution was a bare 4.3%. Private sector was slightly better at Rs 59.84 lakh or 8.1%.

IIM-A to assess jobs’ decency level – www.tenaday.in

November 5, 2008

For more information and FREE online practice tests visit www.tenaday.in

AHMEDABAD: Your pay may be good, but is your job decent? That’s the question IIM-A would pose to executives. The excersie is aimed at making an employee understand certain aspects of his worklife that he usually tends to ignore. So, aspects like freedom of expression, productivity, and gender equality go under the head ‘decency’ .

IIM-A will look after the Indian leg of the international project that aims to help an employee assess his worklife vis-a-vis his counterparts in other countries and find out how fair and enjoyable it is. The project is part of a larger project being carried out by Wage Indicator Foundation, a non-profit organisation associated with University of Amsterdam that will help an employee compare his salary with those of his counterparts in other cities, organisations and countries, through a website, paycheck.in.

Now, a person may log onto decentworkcheck .org and use a series of questions to assess his work situation and compare it with international practices. The project is also simultaneously being carried out in South Africa and The Netherlands.

“The idea behind the project is to promote the feeling of ‘decent work’ among employees across all sectors and make people appreciate such aspects of a job that make it fair and acceptable,’’ said professor of personnel and industrial relations at IIM-A , Biju Varkkey, who is behind the Indian chapter of the project.

While aspects such as ‘productive work,’ ‘job security,’ ‘fair income,’ ‘social protection ,’ ‘career development,’ and ‘gender equality’ help measure a decent work, the project aims to explore certain aspects of decent work from employees’ perspective in Indian work situation, added Mr Varkkey.

An earlier global study on wage indicator data reveals that on an average, 4 out of 10 employees work more hours than agreed upon in their contracts and half of them are not compensated for the extra hour they put in. Employees around the globe find their work mentally and physically exhausting. The data compares decent work standards of 3,50,000 employees across 11 countries in Europe, Latin America and Africa.

IIM-A offers dabbawalas food for thought – www.tenaday.in

November 5, 2008

For more information and FREE online practice tests visit www.tenaday.in

A group of students at Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad, India’s most prestigious business school has won a case study competition on introducing innovative marketing techniques for Mumbai’s famed office meal delivery service, the dabbawallas.

The students believe this network of 5,000-odd people, who deliver home-cooked food to 2 million office-goers everyday, could be impacted by the economic slowdown at a time when competition from delivery units of fast food chains, changes in eating habits and higher incomes could present new challenges.

The dabbawalas have been described as masters of supply chain management by management guru CK Prahalad. They are known to make just one mistake in six million deliveries.

The case study was submitted at Insight 2008, the contest held in collaboration with Starcom MediaVest Group, under IIM-A’s marketing fair.

“Students have suggested creative ways for the dabbawalas to reach to the next level of growth by integrating all aspects of marketing and communication,” said Ravi Kiran, CEO, South East and South Asia, Starcom MediaVest Group.

“The winners suggested a marketing campaign that leveraged both the aspirational and emotional benefits of the dabbawala service,” said Prateek Agarwal, secretary, Insight 2008, at IIM-A.

“They suggested that channel partners would tie up with the dabbawalas either due to their distribution network or the strong sense of pride they instill in Mumbai’s citizens,” Agarwal added.

The students also worked on a publicity campaign that met the objective of extracting “maximum bang for the minimum buck”. This included, among other things, word-of-mouth, local radio, tying up with the Indian Premier League cricket team Mumbai Indians and garnering local political and NGO support.

They also suggested that the service could leverage the current mania for social networking by working on an online campaign driven by a blog attached to the dabbawalas website.

Another solution was to create campaigns to build a brand that would sustain the emotional bonds between dabbawalas and their clientele so that the brand endures every downturn or slowdown. Bollywood actors who represent common people could endorse the service.

Students have also suggested building a database that includes a detailed profiling of customer food preferences, offering vouchers and movie tickets everyday to loyal customers, who earn the maximum points.
