Around 24 companies visited Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), on “Day Zero” of summer placements.
The institute remains tight-lipped about summer placements till the procedure is over but sources close to the process say there has been no dearth of offers made to the first-year students of Post Graduate Programme (PGP). While the banking and financial services sector made its presence felt, recruiters from other sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), manufacturing, consulting, marketing, trading, services, retail, media, infrastructure and operations were more upbeat.
The students will be placed with the companies for a two-month internship programme starting April 2009. These internships later get converted into job offers, called pre-placement offers. “Around 24 companies came to the campus today for summer placements. The actual number of students placed and the salaries offered can only be revealed on November 18, when the summer placements are over,” said a second-year PGP student.
Besides inviting smaller private equity players and wealth management firms, the institute this time ensured that more sectors were represented as it expected a few leading domestic and international companies to falter in offering placements. “IIM-Ahmedabad has a large and diverse pool of recruiters and therefore the status of a few firms is unlikely to impact the opportunities that IIM-A students can expect from our placement process,” IIM-A had earlier said about the impact of the global meltdown on placements.

The Common Admission Test (CAT) for admission to various management education programmes run by the seven Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) is scheduled to be held on Sunday, November 16, 2008.To help the test takers, IIMs have issued an advisory asking students to come to test centers before time and also carry no cell phones and calculators.
The advisory was issued by IIM Bangalore which is conducting the CAT this year. The test will be held in 23 cities across the country. According to IIMs, this year, about 2,76,000 candidates are expected to appear for this test.
Advising candidates to reach venue before time, IIMs recommend: “Candidates are advised to try reach the venue by 9:30 a.m. as traffic conditions are uncertain and sometimes candidates come to the wrong venue. Outstation candidates are advised to reach the city a day in advance and visit the venue to familiarize themselves with the location and time required to reach the venue. Candidates will be allowed to take their seats at 10 a.m. No candidate will be allowed to enter the examination hall after 10:30 a.m.”
Candidates are advised to not carry any cellphones or watches that have calculators too. Says IIMs, “During the test candidates will be allowed to keep with them the Admit Card, HB pencils, eraser, sharpener and a standard (no calculator facility) wrist watch. No other items (especially cell phones) will be allowed. Candidates are advised not to carry cell phones to the venue as these have to be deposited before the candidate is allowed to take the test and might get misplaced.”
Seeking cooperation from stakeholders, IIMs say, “Cooperation from candidates, Principals/ Heads of various colleges/ schools and the general public is solicited for the smooth conduct of the test.”

Ahmedabad, Nov. 13 Despite the global slowdown and threat of job losses looming large in the finance sector everywhere, international firms made an appearance at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, to pick students for the summer of 2009.
Firms such as UBS, BCG and Goldman Sachs, among many others, conducted interviews on day zero of the summer placements which started here on Thursday.
“Around 80 companies visit the campus to select students for the summers over a five-day period and it is very crucial for us as it plays a role in our final placements when we graduate,” said a second year student of the Post Graduate Program.
“Last year, more than half the students were selected on day zero itself, but this year, obviously, the picture does not seem that rosy,” he said. But, that many of the investment banks had come, was a good sign, and all the students were hopeful of being placed by the end of the process, he added.
Feedback encouraging
The process of summer placements just having concluded at IIM-Calcutta and Kozhikode, the feedback is encouraging for the students at other IIMs.
“Though the packages might not be comparable to that of last year, we are confident that we will get fair-enough deals and it should not be a case to worry about,” said a student. As of now, there were no signs of students opting out of finance sector jobs, he added, but if that happened, then the students in the marketing sector might have more competition.
“But things might change tomorrow and taking a long term view of the economy, people will go according to the sector that interests them rather than settling for something which might be safe but uninteresting,” he added.
Last year, Goldman Sachs was the highest recruiter, closely followed by Lehman Brothers. Merrill Lynch and AIG were also prime movers of the summer placements. The names of top companies recruiting this year will only be revealed on the 18th or 19th when the placement process will come to an end, said Mr Pratik Ved, Placement Co-ordinator to Business Line.
