New Delhi: A quintessential example of India’s overpopulation – around 2.5 lakh students will attempt to qualify, or bell, CAT 2008, which will allow them a shot at one of the 1,800 seats at the elite Indian Institutes of Management.
The Common Admission Test, best known as The CAT, will take place this year across 23 cities in India, and will have more than 2.5 lakh students appearing for the exam, including around half a lakh from the National Capital Region.
Around 2.5 lakh forms have been short listed for the CAT 2008 examination, higher than last year’s count of around 2.12 lakh candidates who took the test in 2007. Students who manage to make the cut would then go through other selection procedures at the Indian Institutes of Management at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow and Shillong.
Next year, another six new IIMs are expected to start functioning. A number of other business schools also prefer to accept the CAT scores as part of their own admission criteria, rather than hold competing exams. Around 40 colleges are said to have opted to enlist in the list of institutions who would select students having qualified the CAT exam. CAT scores hold good when applying to other management institutes such as Kirloskar Institute of Management, Mudra Institute of Communication (MICA) Ahmedabad, Nirma Institute of Management, SP Jain Institute, TA PAI and others.

Event: Global Outreach Program
Presented By: Prof. Stephen Covey
Date: 26th July 2007
nternationally respected leadership authority, family expert, teacher, organizational consultant, and author Dr. Stephen Covey took a special session with the students of IIPM Mumbai. Dr. Covey who has dedicated his life to teaching principle-centered living talked about the very important subject of trust not only at an individual level but also at a professional and organizational level. He emphasized how trust plays a pre-dominant role in today’s business. Today’s business gives more credence to Trust rather than due-diligence.
He explained the concept by using Warren Buffet and Bill Gates as an exemplary evidence. Warren Buffet gave close to 30 billion dollars to the Melinda-Gates foundation in a mere 29 days even though both these business tycoons hardly knew each other. The transaction was based more on trust and in today’s business it plays a very important role.

“We are taking efforts to make it a world-class programme and have been adding values to it by introducing features like seminars where speakers from across the country are invited. We also invite guest faculty in each module. We want government to be more supportive for us in running the course,’’ said programme chairperson Sebastian Morris. He was speaking at a press conference organised for the course students to share their experiences at four different universities where they had been for a six-week international immersion.
He said while the DoPT sponsored their international immersion programme, their stay and hostel cost, etc, the fee for the candidates was negotiable . Speaking of the participants of the course from private sectors, Mr Morris said, “People who work a great deal in private sectors and get satisfaction in their sectors, want to make a difference by moving to public management.”
